What AISC Certification Is Actually Worth on Your Project
Most contractor profiles list the AISC logo and move on. The number that matters to an owner is buried in the code.
Chapter N of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings allows special inspection to be transferred, or "waived," from a third-party inspector to a fabricator and erector approved by the authority having jurisdiction, which saves the project money and time because those inspections are performed in-house.
So certification is not decoration. On a large steel package it can remove a line item from your budget, if your AHJ signs off.
It is also audited, not self-declared. Maintaining an AISC certified erector credential requires an annual evaluation by an AISC-accredited auditor, including an internal audit of the quality management system and an on-site project-specific audit. Ask any erector for the certificate number and the date of its last audit. A current certificate is a document, not a talking point.
